George “Trackman” Mason, 74, of Evansville, went to the heavens Monday, October 6, 2014, after a year battle with cancer, with family at his side. He spent the past 26 years battling Parkinson’s disease. He was born June 14, 1940, in Dixon, KY, to the late Reno L. and Jerusha (McCormick) Mason.
He began working at St. Joe Race Track, which led to his love of motorsports. He raced the local dirt tracks many years. Known to many as “Trackman” he was the caretaker of Burdette Park BMX, where he was considered a passionate, caring man and had volunteered for 26 years, helping kids and touching lives. The track is now named after him. He retired from Whirlpool after 37 years and also worked as a shoe repair man in the evenings at Ralph Cleaners in North Park. After retirement, George enjoyed working in his garage helping to fix anything for his friends and family, or even a neighborhood child with a broken bicycle. Though a fan of NASCAR, he was a true fan of the King Richard Petty, and recently fulfilled his dream of having the King take him for a drive.
George was preceded in death by his wife, Judith (Barton) Mason; grandson, Nicholas Mason; parents; and brother, John Mason.
He is survived by his son, Bryan Mason; daughter, Virginia “Jenny” Mason (Tommy); son, Edward Mason (Michelle); longtime companion, Ruth Colvin, and her children, Wendy DeCorrevont (Gary), Jeff Colvin (Brandi) and Melinda DeCorrevont; 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Martha Friday (Doyle) and Margie Richardson (Don).
Funeral Services will be 2:00 PM Monday, October 13, 2014, at Alexander West Chapel, officiated by Rev. Karl Crowe, with burial in Alexander Memorial Park. Friends may visit Sunday from 12:00 to 7:00 PM and Monday from 12:00 PM until service time at the funeral home.
The family would like to give special thanks to the Petty family for making dreams come true; and also to Hospice for the loving care they provided George.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Petty Family Foundation, 311 Branson Mill Road, Randleman, NC 27317; to the George Mason Burdette Park BMX, 5821 Nurrenbern Road, Evansville, IN 47712; or to The Charlier Hospice Center at Deaconess VNA Plus, 610 East Walnut Street, Evansville, IN 47713.
