

Irene Elizabeth Gilliland, 91, of Evansville, IN gained her wings on Sunday, July 13, 2025 at 2:56 p.m. She was born in Baton Rouge, LA on April 13, 1934 as a twin to her late parents Frances (Winston) and Jesse Craig.
Irene shared her childhood with eleven siblings. Throughout her life, she lived in Louisiana, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan. She worked in domestic home cleaning for over 35 years. A devoted member of Peace Baptist Church, Irene served faithfully on both the Usher Board and the Mothers' Board. She was also active in her community, participating in a neighborhood block club and engaging in meetings and group trips.
Irene enjoyed spending time with loved ones and was a member of a bowling league with family and fellow church members. She had a passion for travel and took several cruises. Irene enjoyed working on puzzles and reading.
She was preceded in death by her parents and 2 grandchildren.
Irene is survived by her children, Erwin (Butch) Craig, Sr., David Craig, Valarie Denton, Capt. Lloyd (Junnie) Denton, Jr., LaVerne Denton-Fleming, Troy Denton, and Jimmy Denton; 22 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren, of which have three sets of twins, that make up five generations; 23 great-great-grandchildren; 11 stepchildren; as well as her lifelong friends, Carolyn Outlaw, Clara Jackson, and Carolyn Griffin.
The family would like to give special thanks to Heart to Heart Hospice for their care. Also to her daughters, Valerie and LaVerne for caring for Irene at home.
A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 17, 2025 at Alexander Funeral Home East Chapel, 2115 Lincoln Ave. Evansville, IN 47714 with Pastor Bill Altman officiating. Friends and family may visit from 11:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.
Per Irene’s wishes, she will be buried in Detroit, MI.
