Jane Alice Eberhart, 97, of Evansville, IN passed away on January 30, 2023 with her family by her side. She was born on March 25, 1925 in Evansville to the late Albert and Frances (Lant) Schmidt. Jane graduated from Reitz High School in 1943 and received a Diploma in Nursing from Deaconess Hospital in 1946. She married the late Robert W. Eberhart in 1950 and they lived together in Evansville for 26 years, with a brief time in Bloomington. Jane is survived by her daughters, Jane A. (Eberhart) Bartley of Boynton Beach, FL and Kathryn L. (Eberhart) Johnston of Delray Beach, FL; son, Robert W. Eberhart (Valerie) of Evansville, IN; brother, Thomas Schmidt; grandchildren, Samantha Jane (Bartley) Gehrig, Robert W. Eberhart III, and Elizabeth L. (Eberhart) Kegley (Casey); and great-grandchildren, Boaz, Adah Jane, Eliana, Ezra, Owen, Oliver, Oona Jane, Kameron, and Koltin. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; siblings, Emmalee (Schmidt) Seifert, James Schmidt, and John Schmidt; daughter, Mary Frances Eberhart; grandchildren, Robert Mark Bartley, Trevor Eberhart, and Travis Eberhart; and son-in-law, M. Mark (Butch) Bartley. Jane dedicated 44 years of her life to nursing. She joined the Nurse Cadet Corps of WWII. Because the war had ended upon the completion of her schooling, she was assigned to a veteran’s hospital in Dayton, OH. She worked at Deaconess Hospital for the first years of her career notably in the polio isolation unit. She was a past president of Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing Alumni and a member of Deaconess Hospital Auxiliary after retirement. She retired in 1990 from Evansville State Hospital. She was a member of Salem United Methodist Church her entire life. She was active on several boards, participated heartily in church life, and sang in the choir. She held several positions with United Methodist Women. Jane served as a member of the Vanderburgh County 4-H Center Board and was active with the Indiana State Fair through Purdue Ag Alumni. She was an active participant in the Reitz High Reunion Group having last celebrated its 70th reunion in 2013. She had a passion for quilting and was a member of the Salem United Methodist Church Piecemakers. She designed and made nearly 100 quilts with the group, some which were award winning at the Indiana State Fair. She and the Piecemakers were an integral part of the Pioneer Village, demonstrating their skills at the State Fair. She was a lifetime member of the Southern Indiana Antique and Machinery Club and Vanderburgh County Extension Homemaker. Jane enjoyed hummingbird watching after moving to live with her son, Bob in 2020. She led an active and vibrant life for all of her 97 years. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 8, 2023 at Salem United Methodist Church with Rev. Bessie Adams officiating. Burial will follow at New Salem Cemetery. Friends and family may visit from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 7, 2023 at Alexander North Chapel. They may also visit from 10:00 a.m. until service time on Wednesday at Salem United Methodist Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the March of Dimes or Salem United Methodist Church.
