

John Louis York, 85, of Evansville, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 9, 2018, at St. Vincent Hospital. He was born July 22, 1932, in Posey County, IN to the late Arve and Mary Rosalie (Allison) York.
John proudly served in the US Army during the Korean War and obtained the rank of Corporal. He was a Light Weapons infantryman in Company A 7th Calvary Regiment and received the National Defense Service Medal. John was the squad leader for one of the Army’s first “Buddy Companies” to be sent overseas as part of an experiment in morale and efficiency building. The company was trained at Camp Breckenridge, KY and moved to Japan for assignment to the 1st Calvary Division. In May, John went on the Honor Flight of Southern Indiana to Washington, DC with his daughter, Kim. He was a 55 year member of the Masonic Evansville Lodge #64. John was an avid hunter and fisherman, and loved doing both with his son, Steve. He also loved working in his garden and had a knack for growing tomatoes. He was a faithful member of New Bethel Southern Baptist Church and spent many years coaching their youth basketball teams. In 1994, John retired from Whirlpool after 43 years of service. He and his wife, Barbara, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 22, 2007.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara; siblings, Ruth Reynolds, Herman York, Mary Moore and Charles York; brother-in-law, Ed Russell; sister-in-law, Judy York; and his parents.
He is survived by his daughter and caregiver, Kimberly (Darrin) Still; son, Steven (Joan) York of OK; sister, Margaret Russell; brothers, Arvill, Doug and Paul (Agnes) York; two grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren in OK.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Monday, January 15, 2018, at Alexander West Chapel, officiated by Rev. Mark Lowe, with burial and military rites in Alexander Memorial Park. Visitation will be held Sunday from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM with a Masonic Service at 5:00 PM.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Ohio Valley Dialysis, West River Health Campus, Ohio Valley Heartcare and St. Vincent Hospital for their care over the last several years.
