

He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the US Army Signal Corps. He graduated from DePaul University in Chicago and retired from Ford Motor Company. He loved to dance, particularly the jitterbug, and was a great practical joker. Joe was known for being able to fix almost anything. He loved his extended family and would help them out whenever they needed anything. He was a faithful member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Evansville and a former member of Queen of All Saints Basilica in Chicago.
Joe was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ann; his parents, Julia and William Stefanski; brothers, Stanley Stefanski, Alex Stefanski, Basil Stefanski and William Stevan; sisters, Julie Conroy, Ann Peterson, Irene Laine and Harriet Vincent.
He is survived by his daughter, MaryAnne Mathews and husband, Garret, of Evansville; son, Joseph Stevens and wife, Valerie, of Shepherdstown, WV; sister, Betty Peterson of Ocala, FL; grandchildren, Barcley (Ronda) Stevens, stationed with the US Air Force near Anchorage, AK, Tamarin Brock of Charles Town, WV, Colin (Rachael) Mathews of Indianapolis and Evan Mathews of Daejeon, South Korea; step-grandchildren, Aaron and Allen Frazee of WV; and seven great-grandchildren.
The family expresses its gratitude for the Senior Helpers, staff and residents at Willow Park who made Joe’s last days pleasant ones.
Friends may visit Wednesday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Alexander East Chapel, 2115 Lincoln Avenue, with a memorial service at 5:30 PM. Entombment will be in St. Adalbert Cemetery in Chicago.
