

She graduated from Central High School in 1947. Her career began in administrative roles in manufacturing firms here in Evansville, notably Bernardin and Hoosier Cardinal. Later she joined the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation, where she retired in 1992 as a health benefits administrator. A highlight of her years with the EVSC was joining a group of women in various administrative roles with an interest in singing who formed the School Belles. They performed at events in Evansville during the 1970s.
Joyce and her husband, Robert W. Witte, who were married in 1950, were among the founding members of Christ Church U.C.C. in 1952 where she remained an active member for many years, serving on numerous committees and boards. As a Stephens Minister, she assisted in services and communion at the Evansville Protestant Home.
She was a member of the Riley Hospital Angel Tree Foundation of Evansville, and knitted angels that were sold for fundraisers. She also knitted 500 soft angels for Deaconess Hospital’s neonatal palliative care program. Joyce also knitted blankets for each of her grandchildren and great-grandchild.
Joyce enjoyed traveling throughout the United States over the years, with the Outer Banks, Los Angeles, and Richmond, Virginia among her favorite destinations. She also worked at keeping herself fit with a YMCA membership.
Her great joy was her family and hosted holiday celebrations and other occasions as moments to be with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild.
She is survived by her son Stephen and his wife, Catherine (Martin) of Evansville, and granddaughter, Lindsay of Atlanta; son Jeffrey and his wife, Samantha (Elwood) of Evansville, and granddaughter, Lauren and her fiancé, Rv Oliver, III, and great-granddaughter, Liv, of Henderson, Nevada; grandson, Cameron of Bowling Green, Kentucky; and granddaughter, Catelyn of Evansville.
Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Robert W. Witte; father, Harry Niemeier; mother, Laura (Georget) (Niemeier) Schnacke; and brother, Darrell.
The family would like to thank the Evansville Protestant Home for the gentle care and warm compassion they offered to Joyce during her final days.
Friends and family may gather for a visitation on Friday, March 1, 2024 from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Christ Church U.C.C. (The Church with the Red Door), 3601 Washington, Avenue. Funeral Services, officiated by Rev. Bob Walker, will be held at 1:00 p.m. following the visitation at the church. Joyce’s final resting place will be at Oak Hill Cemetery, Evansville, IN.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests a donation to Christ Church U.C.C. or the Evansville Protestant Home, 3701 Washington Avenue, Evansville, Indiana 47714.
