

Mary was baptized and confirmed at St. Matthews United Church of Christ. She was married to Henry C. Bernhardt on April 27, 1941 at Zion United Church of Christ, where she joined and served on numerous boards and committees. She was a Youth Advisor, Sunday School teacher, an active member of Women’s Fellowship, and sang in the church choir.
Mary was an excellent cook and loved to bake. She loved to work in Zion’s kitchen helping to prepare the annual Fall Sausage Supper.
She was a 1939 graduate of Reitz High School. Mary was employed in the office of Dr. Edward Fritz, DDS from 1964 to 1982 as bookkeeper and office manager.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Henry C. Bernhardt, parents Carl F. Rauch and Mary S. (Frame) Rauch and her beloved stepmother, Edith (Frame) Rauch and brother Gilbert P. Rauch.
She is survived by sons, Rev. Donald W. (Jean) Bernhardt, Daniel P. (Deb) Bernhardt all of Evansville, Richard C. (Janie) Bernhardt of Elberfeld, and Connie Bernhardt of Evansville; two sisters, Gloria Jochim of Evansville, Dorothy (Ronald) Hust of Spanaway, Washington; seven grandchildren, Sara (John) Umbach, Susan (Brady) Kemper, Dr. Richard (Carrie) Bernhardt, Ryan (Anne) Bernhardt, Kyle (Jessica) Bernhardt, Daphne Raider and Kenny (Sarah) Raider; twelve great grandchildren, Emily and Elise Umbach, Clint, Ellie, and Kayla Kemper, Benjamin and Russell Bernhardt, Arthur and Elizabeth Bernhardt, Leah, Lily, and Keagan Raider, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM CDT on Tuesday, September 8, 2015 at Alexander Funeral Home-West Chapel, 2100 W. Illinois Street, Evansville, IN with Rev. Kimron Reising and Rev. John Schroeder officiating with burial to follow in Locust Hill Cemetery. Condolences may be made online at www.AlexanderWestChapel.com.
Visitation will be held from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM Monday, September 7, 2015, and from 10:00 AM to service time on Tuesday.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at The Good Samaritan Home and Deaconess VNA Hospice for the loving care given to Mary.
