

Mildred Shirley Matthews, age 89, of Evansville, Indiana, peacefully passed away to meet her Savior on Tuesday, January 6, 2025 at Brickyard Woodlands Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Newburgh, Indiana.
Mildred was born on August 17, 1936, in Evansville, Indiana, to Charles and Mabel Veach. Known affectionately as Millie, she was raised in Elberfeld and attended Reitz High School and stayed in the Evansville area.
Following high school, Millie worked as a clerk at Strouse’s Department Store, then for the Central Investigation Agency, before beginning a long and successful career in the insurance industry. She worked for P.W. Burns Agency, Evansville Insurance, and later retired from the Heston Agency. She also served as Past President of the Insurance Women Association, reflecting her leadership and dedication to her profession.
Millie touched the lives of many through her church involvement and daily interactions. She was an active member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, where she participated in the Ladies Quilting Group, lovingly making lap robes and blankets for residents of nursing facilities. She also cherished evenings spent playing Bunco and other games with the Good Time Girls social club and her Friday night friends.
Millie is survived by her sons, Michael (Verla) Matthews and Greg (Janett) Matthews; her daughter, Lisa Gregory; and her grandchildren, Erin (Kendall) Matthews, Jessica (Mark) Harrington, Nicole (Carl) Davidson, Kelly (Kyle) Nichols, David (Katie) Gregory, and Kristen (Caleb) Sugg.
She is also survived by her great-grandchildren: Aurora, Bastian, Callie Matthews, Landon Brooks, Adilyn Davidson, Coleman and William Gregory, Forrest Nichols, and Elijah Sugg; as well as many close cousins, three nieces, and two nephews.
She held a special place in her heart for her neighbors, whom she lovingly adopted as her grandchildren and family: Aaron, Nicole, Hannah, and Nora McCormick.
Millie was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Mabel Veach and her twin brother and sister, Charles “Butch” Veach Jr., and her sister, Sharon Kleiman.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 14, 2025, at Alexander Funeral Home East Chapel, 2115 Lincoln Ave., Evansville, IN 47714. Friends and family may visit from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 13, 2025, at the funeral home and from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Evansville, IN.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
