Sylvia “Nicky” R. Hopkins, 84, of Evansville, passed away Friday, June 13, 2014, in Plainfield, IN, in the loving arms of her family. She was born September 9, 1929, the daughter of the late Eline Flittner.
She was a very proud graduate of Deaconess School of Nursing. She held many positions as a Registered Nurse, ending her career as the School Nurse at the University of Evansville. Nicky enjoyed spending time with her family, whom she loved so much. She put her children ahead of herself and never hesitated to do anything they ever needed or asked of her. She was an avid gardener and shared her multitude of flowers with others as a token of her love. She also enjoyed cooking and sharing recipes; no one ever went hungry if Grandma Nicky was involved. She was generous to a fault. She was stunningly beautiful, remarkably funny and absolutely wonderful.
On October 11, 1952, she married the love of her life, William A. Hopkins, who preceded her in death in August 2012. They shared a wonderful life together, truly an unbreakable bond.
Nicky is survived by her two children, W. Chris (Missy) Hopkins of Danville, IN and Laura (Randy) Coard of St. Joseph, MI; five grandchildren, Beau, Clint and Katrinia Hopkins and Jeff and Brian Coard; sister-in-law, Micheline Hopkins; nephew, John (Robin) Hopkins and family; sister, Rosalyn Denton; and nephew, Bill Denton and family.
A memorial service will be held at 2:30 PM Friday, June 20, 2014, at the chapel in Locust Hill Cemetery, with burial to follow. Friends may visit Friday from 1:30 PM until service time at the cemetery chapel.
Memorial contributions may be made to the home where Nicky spent her final days. She was “hand chosen by God” to go to The Gathering Together. Rita Fiorentino opened her house, heart and arms and was indeed an Angel. Her generosity is beyond compare—the family is eternally grateful. Contributions may be made online at www.thegatheringtogether.org or mailed to The Gathering Together, 147 North Center Street, Plainfield, IN 46168. Condolences may be made online at www.AlexanderEastChapel.com.
