William graduated from Bosse High School in 1948 and received his B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Evansville in 1954. He married Joy Baxter on August 3, 1952. He served in the U.S. Air Force until his honorable discharge in 1958 as at 1st Lt. where he was a B 47 pilot. He was president of Roettger Electrical Company where he retired in 1978.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Joy (Baxter) Roettger and his son, William Roettger, Jr.
He is survived by his daughter, Constance Sanders (David); son, Thomas Roettger (Belinda); grandchildren, Kelsey Pitcher (Jordan), Megan Hurtig (AJ), Sarah Russell (Samuel), Samuel Roettger (Cynthia); and Michaela Roettger; and great-grandchildren, Cora Leigh Pitcher, Rebekah Joy Russell and baby Hurtig.
