

In 1950, after graduating from high school, young and ambitious Matthew joined the United States Army and served honorably for 23 years. He fought in the Vietnam War and earned the rank of Sgt. 1st Class. In 1973 he retired from the military and pursued a bachelor degree in Criminal Justice from Chicago State University.
Although, looking to pursue a career in law enforcement, an unexpected opportunity to work with the Chicago Public School was offered to him. He worked diligently for 25 years as an R.O.T.C. instructor at Hyde Park Career Academy.
At the age of 27 he was united in holy matrimony to Joan Elizabeth Ellioe with whom he had two children: Matthew Strong, Jr. and Rhonda Strong Davis. He was predeceased by his son and wife of 45 years.
In 2003 he married Eunice Knox Strong with whom he spend his remaining years. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather.
Matthew was a good hardworking man who was loved and respected by all who knew him. His sense of humor and honesty will be greatly missed. Memories of his person will remain forever in the hearts of those whose lives he touched.
He leaves behind: his loving and devoted wife, Eunice Knox Strong; daughter, Rhonda Strong Davis; grandchildren, Whitney Davis and Maurice Strong; 11 siblings: Hattie Bonner, Melva-Jean Wright, Annetta Myers, Callie McGee, Barbie Conley, Katherine McGee, Patricia Hinton, Marilyn Chambers, Charles Strong, Richard Strong, Dian Young and a host of relatives and friends.
