

Elizabeth (Betsy) Chapman Thompson, 83, of Fairfax Virginia, passed away in her Fairfax home on February 7, 2015. Beloved wife of Horace Eugene (Gene) Thompson for 49 years. Mother of A. Ramsay Stallman of Oakton, James C. Stallman of Wilbraham, MA, Stuart I. Stallman of Fairfax and Richard L. Stallman of Gainesville and their respective wives, Sandy, Susan, Janet and Nina. Stepmother of Janet Lee Thompson, and Gary Thompson and his wife, Cynthia. Ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Betsy was a lifelong resident of the City of Fairfax, Virginia. She was the only child of Thomas P. Chapman, Jr. and Irvine T. Chapman, who were prominent members of the Fairfax community, her father, Thomas, who served nearly 35 years as Clerk of the Fairfax County Circuit Court. From 1948 until 1964, she was married to Col. Arnold S. Stallman, father of her four sons. They both graduated from Fairfax High School in 1946. Her time as a military officer’s wife afforded her the opportunity to leave Fairfax and travel abroad. A tour in Vicenza, Italy near Venice allowed her to embrace the Italian people and their culture. Betsy Thompson was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in March 2014 at the age of 82. During her lifetime and as she faced her final health challenges, she had a great circle of support from Gene, her children, their spouses, grandchildren and great grandchildren. The Rev. Henry Brinton, pastor at Fairfax Presbyterian Church, and her church family have been a great source of inspiration and support as well. Extended family and friends completed her generous support circle. Her vibrant spirit and loveliness will be missed but felt always by all her knew her. Betsy never met a stranger! Her genuine warm nature was ever revealed through her enthusiasm, wittiness and bright smile that instantly made anyone she met feel special. She left a lasting impression with every encounter. All who knew her will likely agree. She was a faithful member of Fairfax Presbyterian Church where she served as an Elder. A memorial service will be held at the church, 10723 Main Street, Fairfax, on Thursday, February 12, 2015 at 2:00 pm. followed by a private family burial service at Fairfax City Cemetery where she will be laid to rest next to her parents.
