Erzsebet, 73, of Bethesda, Maryland, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2025. She was born on November 12, 1951, in Hungary to Rudolph and Anna Jonas.
A brilliant mind and a compassionate soul, Erzsebet earned a PhD in biochemistry in Hungary and taught at numerous universities in Eastern Europe. She then moved to the United States when asked by the National Institutes of Health to conduct genetics research. Her work was not only a testament to her intellect but also to her deep desire to contribute to the world in meaningful ways.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Erzsebet was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She married Carl and together built 38 years of cherished memories. She was the proud and loving mother of Daniel and Angela and step-mother to Lisa and Carl Joseph. Erzsebet was the adoring grandmother of Jonathan, Alex, and Ariella. She is also survived by her brother István, sister-in-laws Valéria and Mária, and her many nephews and nieces.
She had a passion for gardening, finding peace and joy among flowers and plants. An athlete at heart, she especially loved gymnastics in her youth and carried that love of sports throughout her life as an avid Washington Nationals fan. As an accomplished seamstress, she designed and made numerous clothes and costumes for her kids to encourage their imagination and creativity. She brought her love of science home with her, encouraging others to experiment and learn more about the world around them, no matter how messy the experiments became.
More than anything, Erzsebet was a beacon of warmth and kindness, always putting others before herself. Her generosity, wisdom, and love will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
