

Harold H. Abt Sr. passed away on Wednesday, September 16th, 2015. He was born on March 28, 1925 in Brooklyn NY to Henry and Irene Abt. He graduated in 1941 at the age of 16 from Richmond Hill HS and the Maritime Academy at Fort Schuyler NY in 1943. As a Naval officer during WWII, he served on board the USS Winooski and was active in both European and Pacific theaters. He was the last surviving crew member of his ship. He received his teaching degree at Hofstra University and Master's Degrees from SUNY New Paltz and NYU. His teaching career began in Commack NY and he later became a Principal in the Nanuet NY Public Schools, retiring in 1980. On June 24th 1950, Mr. Abt married the love of his life, Jean Louise Walthers, who predeceased him on April 29th, 2014 after 63 years of marriage. Mr. Abt is survived by his 3 sons, James, Robert, and Harold Jr, their wives and 8 grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 26, 2015 at 2:00PM EST at Christ Presbyterian Church, 12410 Lee Jackson Memorial Highway, Fairfax, VA 22033. Following the service, the family invites guests to join them for a reception on the church premises. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in the name of Mr. Abt to the “Alzheimer’s Society” in honor of his wife Jean.
