Michael J. Simpson passed away after suffering a series of medical conditions over the past several years, on 18 February 2021. Mike was born on June 12, 1947 in Fort Dodge, Iowa to John Francis and Mary Audrey Simpson. Mike grew up in the Northern Virginia area and graduated from Bishop O’Connell high school in 1966. After which Mike attended Fort Dodge Community College and the Florida Institute of Technology. Mike joined the Navy and sailed aboard the Navy’s first nuclear powered aircraft carrier USS ENTERPRISE, during the Vietnam War. Following active duty service, Mike graduated from George Mason University in 1978 and subsequently continued to serve his country in the defense industry until his retirement in 2010. Mike settled in Annapolis, MD where he lived for decades, only recently moving back to Fairfax, VA to be closer to family. Mike is survived by his three sisters: Nora Lebahn (Lawrence), Mary Jorgensen (Donald) and Joanne Darnell (Donald). He was blessed with three nieces, seven nephews and twenty-one great nieces and great nephews. Mike was 4th Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus and a long-time parishioner of St. Andrew By the Bay in Annapolis. Mike was a devout catholic and outdoor enthusiast. He loved fishing, sailing, gardening and traveling in his RV. He also had a passion for photography and woodworking. A viewing will be held before Mass at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday 23 February 2021 at St. Leo the Great Roman Catholic Church, a Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. followed by internment at Fairfax Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made to either Catholic Charities or the Lamb Center in Fairfax, VA., in Michael’s honor.
