Before graduating from McDonald High School in 1958, a young Roger submitted an essay on “A Study of Literature” focusing on the role of history as a record of events and of literature as the means to document the character and spirit of historic events. His essay was accepted and published by the National Essay Association. After high school, he continued his pursuit of history and literature, earning a baccalaureate degree in Liberal Arts from Marietta College in Ohio and a master’s degree in History at Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He served 30+ years as a public school teacher, 28 of which he taught middle school history, government, and social studies right here in Fairfax, Va. During his summers and after retiring, he focused on his painting business. He became well known and sought after for his attention to detail, craftmanship, and dependability. Throughout his adult life, Roger was civically minded and a staunch defender of the under privileged and disenfranchised. He loved fishing, reading, crossword puzzles, classic country music, sports, a good Manhattan, and especially Pam’s great gourmet meals.
