He was a talented Nurse Anesthetist, a proud Army Veteran, an accomplished soccer goalie and roller hockey player. Waldemar’s life journey was marked by resilience and dedication to endless learning, particularly studies in medicine, astronomy, history, and psychology.
Born on July 12, 1938, he was the son of Virgilio and Luisa Patricio deOliveira. His siblings include Nuno deOliveira, Lorena Patricio deOliveira Dauteuil, and the late Aida Patricio deOliveira Wallbank. Waldemar was married to his beloved wife, Maria Frias deOliveira for 63 years. Together they raised a loving family including their children, David deOliveira, Paula deOliveira, and Christopher deOliveira all of Fairhaven, Massachusetts.
Waldemar was very proud of his grandchildren, Sarah deOliveira, Crisitan Lee Buzzell, Christopher deOliveira, Seth deOliveira and Cody deOliveira and his great grandchildren who brought him much joy.
Waldemar was born and raised in Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel, Azores. After high school graduation, he came to the United States where he joined the US Army and attained the rank of Major. He earned Degrees in both Nursing and Psychology. He worked at St Luke’s Hospital as a Nurse Anesthetist for 33 years while he also served in the Army Reserves after Active Duty. He was extremely dedicated to his work and the comfort of his patients, before, during, and after surgery. He was respected and admired by his colleagues at St Luke's Hospital.
He had a love of classic cars and collected vintage radios, from the tiny transistors to the large, beautiful pieces, all of which he would drive to Boston to be repaired if they did not work.
He treasured his home in the Azores in the village of Achadinha and the park in the village of Achada dedicated to his accomplished poet father, Virgilio.
He truly loved hosting parties at his various homes, ensuring there was music and dancing. He was dedicated to his yard and his love for his beautiful lawns, gardens and fruit trees. He loved to be outside. He had a passion for sports, especially soccer, all animals, astronomy, history, and comedy, in particular his fondness of the Three Stooges. He made friends wherever he went and he always had a smile. Although he endured Machado Joseph Disease for many years under the loving care of his wife, he never complained about the difficulties or challenges he faced.
He was grateful for the help he received from the VA, Beacon Hospice, and Accent Care Hospice. On behalf of the entire family, a special thanks is sent for the loving care provided by Beacon Hospice Nurses, Hospice Aides, Volunteers, Chaplains, Social Workers and all office staff. They provided comfort and joy to his everyday life.
