

Charles served in the 43rd Division of the 102nd Infantry Regiment of the U.S. Army and was stationed in Augsburg, Germany, from 1952 to 1954. Upon discharge, Charles became a meat-cutter and worked for 40 years at the B & H stores in East. St. Louis.
Charles was a devoted family man who loved family celebrations and working on home-improvement projects at his children's and grandchildren's homes. He was a dedicated Christian who served his church (St. Peter's Lutheran Church, East St. Louis, and later Signal Hill Lutheran Church, Belleville) as elder, congregational president, Sunday school superintendent, and Adult Bible Class leader. Charles spent his leisure time listening to his collection of albums and CD's.
He was preceded in death by his parents, R.C. and Myrtle Hammond; and his daughter, Pamela Henard (Truman).
Beloved husband of LaDona J., nee Ihmels, Hammond, whom he married on Feb. 11, 1950; father of Linda Taff (Greg) and Mark Hammond (Joe Kirkpatrick); grandfather of Sarah Humes (Eric), Meghan Taff (Michael Clarke), and Matthew Henard (Holly); great-grandfather of Claire, Emilie, Elise, and Chloe Humes.

Funeral: Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 9, 2014, from 10 a.m. to noon with the service immediately following at Lake View Memorial Gardens, Fairview Heights, Ill.
