George Rolland Buehrer, of Troy, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 22, 2026, at the age of 89. Born on May 7, 1936, in Granite City, Illinois, Rolland was the beloved son of George and Ruby (Cox) Buehrer and lived a life defined by devotion to his family, his faith, and his community.
Rolland was preceded in death by his parents; his cherished wife and lifelong sweetheart, Nancy (Mooney) Buehrer; and his sister, Gloria Mahr.
He leaves behind a loving family who will forever carry his legacy: his children, Linda (Kenny) Hoback, Kent (Anna) Buehrer, and Dawn (Alan) Sheridan; his grandchildren, Bryson (Rebecca) Buehrer and Sarah (Dylan) Hartzold; his great-grandchildren, Renae and August; his brother, Gary; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
After earning his Associate’s Degree from Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Rolland married Nancy, the love of his life. They cherished 57 beautiful years together, traveling to their favorite places and serving the Lord side by side. Together, they built a beautiful life rooted in partnership, hard work, and deep family ties. Whether building homes, tackling projects together, or raising their three children, Rolland and Nancy truly did everything together. They were active members of their community and church in Tremont, Illinois, where Rolland was known for his steady presence and willingness to serve.
An avid sportsman in his younger years, Rolland enjoyed playing recreational league softball, hunting, fishing, golfing, and coaching or cheering on his children and grandchildren in their many activities. He loved watching Cardinal baseball and enjoyed attending Spring Training games for several years. After retirement from the U.S. Government in 1996, he embraced the freedom to travel, golf more often, and give back in new ways. His faith led him & Nancy on mission trips with their church to the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica—journeys he planned with great care and precision, ensuring every detail was just right - relishing the opportunity to share their faith and love with others.
Rolland had a remarkable gift for problem-solving and craftsmanship. He was always the first to step in when a project needed doing, from small home repairs to full kitchen renovations and even building several homes with family members. He shared many of these projects with his son-in-law, Kenny, who fondly remarked, “Rolland was the brains, and I was the brawn.” Together, they accomplished more than just renovations; they built stories, laughter, and bonds that will be cherished forever.
Above all, Rolland will be remembered for his quiet strength, generous spirit, and unwavering love for his family. He leaves behind a life well lived, and his memory will live on through all who were blessed to know him. He will be deeply missed, but we find comfort knowing he’s whole again, reunited with Nancy, and at peace with Christ.
A visitation will be held at Lake View Funeral Home, located at 5000 North Illinois Street, Fairview Heights, IL, 62208, on January 31, 2026, from 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm.
