Paul was born in Hamburg, Germany on August 21, 1930. As a young man he immigrated to the United States and served his newly adopted country as a member of United States Air Force working in the newly formed Air Weather Service. He was assigned to Germany when he married the girl next door and the love of his life, Helga Wendt on June 28, 1958 in Wilhelmsburg, Germany. He served in the Air Force for 30 years and achieved the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. While serving in the military, he continued his education and obtained a Masters Degree in Counseling.
He was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served gladly, faithfully, and diligently when asked to do so.
Paul was a family man. He set a great example for his children on how a marriage should be. He leaves behind a much loved and cherished wife of 63 years, Helga (Wendt), and 3 children, Michael (Sara), Thomas (Jackie), and Carmen (Fred). His grandchildren [Celeste, Paul (Jennifer), Jared (Mollie), Kristina (Austin), Shaun, Monica (Aaron), Scott, Chantel (Chris), Meagan (Tyler) and Blake] and his great grandchildren (Rosalee, Liberty, Kinnley, Jethro, Douglas, Clark, Jared, Kaiya, Kalvin, Evangeline, Sawyer, and Noah) love him very much and will miss his presence.
Paul had a quiet sense of humor, loved learning, and enjoyed classical music (from opera to marches to Gregorian chants). He was a champion chess player. He loved exploring new, historical places. But most of all he loved his Helga. It is fitting that the last voice he heard was hers.
Paul will be missed by all those who loved him.
His memorial service will be on Saturday, the 3rd of July, 10 am at the Lake View Funeral Home in Fairview Heights, IL. Visitation will be held from 9:30 am- 10:00 am.
Memorial donations may be made to HSHS Hospice.
