Walter proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. He retired as an operating engineer and was a member of Local 520, for just shy of 60 years. He was a proud union man, who carried the local’s banner in the Labor Day Parade for 25 years. He was extremely active in his community and was a 50 year member of the VFW, Gothic Lodge 852 Af & Am, Scottish Rite, High Twelve International, and the Ainad Shriners. He also was a member of the Girl Scouts of America, enabling him to spend even more quality time with his wife and daughters. He enjoyed model railroading, gardening, and woodworking with his grandson. He was quite the storyteller and never turned down an opportunity to add humor to any situation. He loved to travel and spent a great deal of time in Europe and Costa Rica. He was a loving family man, who always put others before himself; he will truly be missed by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna C. Rohwedder, nee Frank; a son, Walter E. Rohwedder, Jr., in infancy; and two brothers, Clarence and Donald Rohwedder.
Surviving to cherish his memory are his two loving daughter, Alice (Russell) Del Vecchio, of Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania and Christy Thomas, of Belleville, Illinois; his grandchildren, Seth J. Drobney, Ashlee Thomas, and Drue (Beth Broadhurst) Thomas; a brother Henry Rohwedder; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
