He was born in Newark, New Jersey on August 28, 1953 to John Hislop and Joan Nilges. He was raised in Fairview Park and loved playing in Rocky River Reservation, skating on the frozen river, and building go-karts.
Bruce graduated from St. Edward High School in 1971 and Walsh College in 1975, with a degree in business management.
In 1992, Bruce married Mary (née Cerny), his lifelong love and companion. They were blessed with two children, Michelle and Justin.
Bruce loved nature and spent much of his free time exploring outdoors and hiking. He volunteered at the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. In Fairview Park, he was often recognized for strolling around the neighborhood while reading a book.
Bruce had several jobs, including at Erie Lackawanna, Conrail, and Cuyahoga Valley Railroads, where he gained a love of trains that he shared with his family. He retired after 39 years managing seized property for U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
Bruce is remembered as the beloved husband of Mary, father of Michelle Armstrong (Max) and Justin, brother of John, and uncle and friend of many. He loved cats and wanted to adopt each one he encountered, so the family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Bruce’s name to Lake Humane Society www.lakehumane.org
