THOMAS M. SCHMITZ, age 78, entered into rest March 31, 2017. Dearest husband of Gloria (nee Sabo) for 52 years. Devoted father of Christopher and Susan (Schmitz) Dunn (John). Loving papa of Kathryn Hope Dunn. Brother of David L. Schmitz, S.M., Judith Mott (Thomas), and the following deceased: Richard Schmitz, Joan Cachat, and Paul Schmitz. Mr. Schmitz was a practicing patent attorney for over 45 years and was formerly general patent counsel for SCM Corporation. Subsequently through mergers, he was assistant general counsel and patent counsel for Glidden/ICI Paints. After retiring from Glidden, he was associated with the intellectual property law firm of Hudak, Schunk, and Farine. Mr. Schmitz was a graduate of Case Institute of Technology (B.S.ChE), Baldwin Wallace College (M.B.A.), and Cleveland Marshall Law School (J.D.). He was past president of the Cleveland Intellectual Property Association. Mr. Schmitz published numerous articles on environmental law and intellectual property law, and also co-authored a book on the History of Inventions, Patents, and Patent Lawyers in the Western Reserve. Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church, Tuesday, April 4th, 2017, at 10 A.M. where family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, family suggests masses for Thomas or contributions to the Poor Clare Nuns, 3501 Rocky River Drive, Cleveland, OH, 44111.
