Adele S. (Lian) Azar, age 89, peacefully passed away Saturday, May 14, 2016. She was the loving wife of the late Fred H. Azar for 32 years before his passing in 1988, after which she assumed her role as beloved matriarch to the Azar family. They were proprietors of Almac’s Diner from 1969 to 1986.
Born in Worcester, MA, daughter of the late Joseph and Freda (Hallal) Lian, she was a Westport resident for 55 years whose home provided coffee and cookies for many.
A devout communicant of St. Anthony of the Desert Church, she was also an active member of the Lebanese-American Ladies Auxiliary and Blessed Mother Guild. She loved to play cards, especially enjoying poker and pitch. Cooking for her family was a favorite pastime, and to love her was to have some hummus. A woman of few words, she possessed the lost art of listening, and gifted many generations her boundless wisdom and comfort.
Mrs. Azar is survived by her three children, Mary E. Azar and her husband Gregory Borges of Swansea, Fred J. Azar of Pawtucket and Mark A. Azar of Somerset; one brother, Hon. Joseph Lian, Ret.; six grandchildren, Derek Azar, Lauren Azar, Aaron Borges, Matthew Borges, Mark Borges and Madeline Azar; her dear sister-in-law, Isabel (Azar) Rishmany and several nieces and nephews. She was the devoted sister of the late Eleanor Hajjar and Yvonne Russell, all of whom are now happily "reunited".
Her funeral will be held on Thursday, May 19, 2016 at 8:30 AM from the Waring-Sullivan Home of Memorial Tribute at Cherry Place, 178 Winter St., Fall River, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM in St. Anthony of the Desert Church, 300 N. Eastern Ave., Fall River, MA 02723. Visiting hours will be Wednesday from 4:00 to 8:00PM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Anthony of the Desert Church or to the charity of your choice. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Fall River.
