

Born on January 27, 1940 in New Bedford MA. Son of the late Elizabeth (Davis) Reed and Robert Reed. Beloved husband of Susan (Johnson) Reed and Father of Benjamin Reed of Bristol, RI and Caroline (Reed) Tafoya of Camp Hill, PA. died after a brief illness on Tuesday January 3, 2012.
Mr. Reed grew up in Fairhaven, MA and moved with his family to Tiverton, RI when he was 7. His youth was spent as a member of the Tiverton Yacht Club sailing his Candy Boat class sailboat the “Jawbreaker” and his Towne Class sailboat “Peanut” He attended Fort Barton Elementary School and Pocasset School in Tiverton, RI and was a member of the 1957 Class at B.M.C. Durfee High School in Fall River, MA. He went on to earn his BA from Bucknell University in Lewisburg, PA in 1961 and a MA from Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT in 1969.
In 1965, he married Susan Johnson from Carmel, NY and settled in Tiverton. He taught in the Tiverton School system for 28 years. He was a seventh grade teacher of English and History at Pocasset School, and then History at Tiverton High School and severed as Department Head of the History Department on two occasions. In addition he was an Adjunct Professor of US History at Salve Regina University in Newport, RI for over 25 years. After retiring from teaching, he continued his true passion and became a travel agent at Park Avenue Travel in Portsmouth, RI.
Always an avid traveler, Mr. Reed spent his summers loading up the family car traveling the United States and Canada. He also traded houses with families in Denver, CO and London England. Once becoming a travel agent he was able to forgo the family road trips and spend his spare time traveling the world and collecting strange and unusual things.
During these travels he amassed a collection of over 1300 snow globes and other assorted water filled shaky objects. He and his wife Susie visited 6 of the 7 continents and almost every country of the world. He was a founding member of “The Quest” and enjoyed this annual trip with his closest friends to find the perfect libation. He continued the family travel tradition with his granddaughters Elizabeth and Natalie Tafoya of Camp Hill, PA. Each year they would set out on a different “Travels with Nana and Harry” adventure.
In addition to traveling he enjoyed spending time as a member of the European Train Enthusiasts Eastern New England Chapter and building HO scale model European railroads. He was also a member of the Tiverton Bicentennial Commission and the TIverton Middle School Building Committee.
Mr. Reed is survived by his wife Susan, his son Benjamin and wife Martha of Bristol, RI, his daughter Caroline and husband Artie Tafoya, and their daughters Elizabeth and Natalie of Camp Hill, PA. His extended family includes Lee Ann Freitas and her son Levi Charette of Bristol, RI.
