

Harvey Hill Thayer, age 85, of Little Compton, RI passed away Thursday, September 6, 2012 at the Sakonnet Bay Manor peacefully surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Pollie Straw Thayer to whom he had been married for the past 55 years.
Born in Providence, RI, and the son of the late Robert Fessenden and Katharine Harvey Thayer, he lived with his wife and children for many years in Dover, MA.
He attended Moses Brown before graduating from Milton Academy in 1945, then Harvard University in 1950.He served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was the Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer at Polaroid Corporation in Cambridge, MA for 38 years before retiring in 1989. When his family was younger, they lived in Scotland where he was responsible for establishing a new manufacturing facility for Polaroid.
Mr. Thayer was an avid bird watcher, stamp collector, and fan of antique cars. He enjoyed playing and watching sports as well as traveling, especially to Africa, London and Bermuda – where he enjoyed many trips with his wife and children.
In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by two daughters; Jen Thayer of Hudson, MA; Tracy Parsons and her husband Peter of Medfield, MA; his son; Harvey H. Thayer Jr., and his wife Valerie of Concord, MA. His younger son, David Straw Thayer, predeceased him. Mr. Thayer found much joy with his six grandchildren; Joshua, Emily, David, and Holly Parsons, and Caroline and Olivia Thayer. He is survived by his sister, Mary Ann Makepeace, her husband William of Little Compton, RI.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 27, 2012 at 11:00AM in the United Congregational Church, at the Commons in Little Compton, RI. Relatives and friends are invited. Burial is private. Contributions in his honor may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 480 Pleasant St., Watertown, MA 02472 or to the Massachusetts Audubon, 208 South Great Rd., Lincoln, MA 01773.
