

Mario V. Furtado, age 80, of Fall River, passed away Sunday, September 7, 2025, at Hospital do Divino Espirito Santo, in Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel, Acores after a brief illness. He was the husband of Maria de Lourdes Furtado with whom he shared 26 years of marriage.
Born in Nordeste, Sao Miguel, Acores, a son of the late Jose and Maria Conceicao (Valadao) Furtado, he immigrated to the United States in 1970 and settled in Fall River. Mario served in the Portuguese Army from 1966-1969. He worked in the maintenance department for Sears at the Galleria Mall for many years prior to his retirement in 2008. He also worked part-time for Marshalls in Swansea until 2024. Mr. Furtado enjoyed his daily walks, taking care of his garden in Sao Miguel, playing the accordion and harmonica and spending time with family.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one stepdaughter, one stepson, four step-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Manuel Furtado, Maria Fernanda Daponte, Maria Sandy Macedo, Antonio Furtado, Serafina Franco and Duarte Furtado.
His funeral will be held on Wednesday, September 17 at 9:00AM from the Waring-Sullivan Home at Cherry Place, 178 Winter St., Fall River followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00AM in Santo Christo Church, Columbia St., Fall River. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours Tuesday from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Burial in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Fall River.
