

Born in Fall River, she was a daughter of the late Kevin R. and Doris E. (Rigby) Smith.
A graduate of Sacred Hearts Academy in Fall River, she began a career with the New England Telephone Company in 1952 as a telephone operator. She advanced through various assignments including Chief Operator and District Manager at offices in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Maine.
She also served on the faculty of AT&T’s Large Team Management Training Institution in Morristown, New Jersey, supervising the training of Bell System managers from throughout the country.
Prior to her retirement in 1990 she was Director of Operations for NYNEX’s Operator Services Department in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
Marjorie attended Stonehill College and Northeastern University’s College of Business Administration. She was an active volunteer at Blithewold’s Mansion, Gardens and Arboretum in Bristol, R.I. and a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
To those who knew her, Marjorie will be remembered as a kind, caring and generous person who gave much and asked for little in return. Marjorie was a woman with class, devoted to her family and friends and a loving daughter, sister and aunt who was always there to support and encourage.
She is survived by and will be missed by a sister, Marilyn Rose of Maryland, brother-in-law Randolph Rose, and two brothers, Donald K. Smith and his partner Andrew Winters of West Kingston, R.I. and Chief James M. Smith (Retired – Somerset Police Dept) and his wife Joan. She was Aunt Marje to Laurie O’Brien and her husband David of Ellicot City, MD, Julie Smith of Miami, FL., Eric Smith of Fairbanks, AK, Gregory Rose and his wife Joan of Titusville, FL., and Steven Rose of Lusby, MD.
Marjorie also leaves her close and long time friend Holy Union Sister Barbara Kirkman.
Her funeral will be held on Thursday, September 16, 2010 at 9am from the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME OF MEMORIAL TRIBUTE AT CHERRY PLACE 178 Winter St., Fall River followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10am in Sacred Heart Church, Linden St., Fall River. Visiting hours are Wednesday from 4-8pm. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Fall River.
