
Sam was born and raised in New York City, the son of the late Nathan and Sarah (Fuchs) Smolowitz. He then lived many years in Westport, CT and commuted into Manhattan daily before calling Tiverton, RI his home for the last 6 years.
He was a graduate of Stuyvesant High School in New York City where he was on the men’s basketball team that played a game in Madison Square Garden. Sam was a U.S. Navy Veteran having served during World War II. Upon being honorably discharged from the Navy, Sam earned his Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from City College of New York (‘CUNY’).
He grew his father’s textile business in lower Manhattan going on to run the company for 50 years before passing it on to his son, Jay. When not working, he enjoyed spending time with family and friends, traveling the world, and watching the Knicks, Mets, and NFL football games regularly. Sam will be remembered for his genuine kindness, sense of humor, generosity, and positive outlook on life. He loved music and a good party throughout his life until his final months.
In addition to his wife Dorothy, Sam is survived by one son, Jay Small and his wife Doris; two daughters, Susan Davidove-Coniglio and her husband Joe, and Dana Small; one stepson, Todd Lusk and his wife Dawn; one stepdaughter, Jillian Lusk; three grandchildren, Andrew Davidove, Erin Cicchino and her husband Aaron, and Julie Small; and one great-grandchild, Madison Cicchino. He was the brother of the late Ellen Mandler of Miami, FL and Molly Telson of NJ. He is also survived by many nephews and nieces. His family loved and adored him.
Sam made an impact on so many lives, and he will be dearly missed. Private arrangements are in the care of the Waring-Sullivan Home at Cherry Place, Fall River, MA. A celebration of his long and amazing life will be planned for family and friends this year in New York City.
