A graduate of Central school for Tibetans Mussoorie, he furthered his education at the esteemed St. Stephen’s college, earning both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in modern History, while also earning a Bachelor’s in Education. After completing his studies in 1976, Benpa played a pivotal role in meeting the qualifications required to establish the high school program in the Tibetan Children’s Village School in Dharamsala. Personally approached by Ama Jetsun Pema la to fulfill the position.
In that beautiful year, Benpa united his soul with his beloved, Dicky, and together they journeyed through 48 radiant years filled with boundless love, unwavering commitment, and the purest of partnerships.
From 1977 to 1993, Benpa’s passion for education shone brightly as he served as a teacher and Vice Principal in various CST schools, leaving an indelible impact on countless lives. He is lovingly remembered by students in Kollegal, Mussoorie, Shimla, Dalhousie, Sonada and Mundgod.
Benpa immigrated to the US in 1993 as part of the Tibetan refugee resettlement project. Benpa joined Radio Free Asia Tibetan service as part of the initial team in October of 1996. Benpa served as the Deputy Director and Chief of Staff during his tenure before finally retiring in 2022.
Benpa’s legacy extends beyond his professional achievements, he leaves behind a loving family, including his wife Dicky and three cherished children Dolkar and her husband Tenor, Jampa and his husband Keith, and Gelek and his wife Kunchok Dolma. He also leaves behind three beautiful grandchildren; Kunzang, Khenze and Norla. Though he may have left this world, his spirit and influence will forever endure in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
