Passed away on October 7, 2014. Beloved husband of Joyce, father of Steve and Mark, father-in-law of Nancy and Barbara, grandfather of Joe, Jack, Charles, Rachel and Maggie, grandfather-in-law of Christina and Chrystal, and great-grandfather of Evan.
Born in 1928 in Oklahoma City, he was married in Morganfield, Kentucky, and then lived in Springfield, OH, Indianapolis, IN, and Moline, IL, before his final move to Falls Church, Virginia in 1996.
A wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he was active in his community and his church. After being honorably discharged from the US Army in 1952, he graduated from Wittenberg College, and then spent most of his career with Deere & Company. Following his retirement he was an active volunteer, including for the Salvation Army and a hospice organization in Moline, and for N Street Village in Washington, DC. Well known for his cheerful disposition, his abilities as a handyman, and for his cooking skills over a barbeque grill, he took his greatest pleasures from the life he shared with his wife, Joyce, whom he called JBDB, and their dogs, their travel, their bridge playing, their nightly bourbon, and, especially, their grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 22, at 11 a.m., at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 1545 Chain Bridge Road (corner of Westmoreland Street), McLean, Virginia 22101. A Graveside Service at Arlington National Cemetery will be scheduled next year.
Memorial contributions may be made to N Street Village Shelter and Recovery Center for Homeless Women, 1333 N Street, NW, Washington, DC 20005, www.nstreetvillage.org; the Salvation Army, www.salvationarmy.org; or Heifer International, PO Box 8058, Little Rock, AR 72203, www.heiferfoundation.org.
