Frank Coleman Young was born June 10, 1935, in Roanoke, Virginia. He was the second of four children of John William (“Bill”) and Eleanor (née Coon) Young.
Due to the uncertainties of Depression and war, his family moved frequently throughout his childhood, living in Roanoke, Petersburg, and Arlington, Virginia, Knoxville, Tennessee, and Sharon, Pennsylvania. Eventually they settled in Arlington where he graduated from Washington-Lee High School.
Frank graduated from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and earned his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Maryland. Frank taught at the University for several years and spent most of his career at the Naval Research Laboratory as a research physicist. His work involved basic research experiments to enable better understanding of the principles that could ultimately lead to the development of fusion energy.
He married Carol Owen in June 1959. They raised their three children in Oxon Hill, Maryland. He and Carol spent their retirement years in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and were blessed with eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Frank was an active member of the church, serving as a deacon and teaching Sunday school for many years. His passion was tennis, a game which he played well into his eighties.
Frank is survived by his children: Suzanne (Allen), Lynette (Stephen), and Forrest (Jodi), his grandchildren: Matthew (Michelle), Diana (Rory), Julia (Aaron), Megan (Dylan), Charlotte, Owen, Alex, and Jacob, and great-grandchildren: Emery, Miriam, Luke, Margaret, Judah, Talia, Micah, Lawerence and Clara.
