OBITUARIO

Gerald Joseph Torregrossa

26 noviembre , 194620 junio , 2020

On June 20, 2020, Gerald “Jerry” Joseph Torregrossa, loving father of two children and four grandchildren, passed away. Jerry was born in Washington, D.C. and spent his entire life in the Northern Virginia area. He served in the Navy during Vietnam on a guided missile destroyer, the USS Buchanan. Jerry joined the U.S. Capitol Police department in 1972 and retired from there in 2001. Jerry had a passion for sailing. He bought his first sailboat in 1977 and enjoyed sailing up and down the Potomac River with his children as often as possible. One tradition they enjoyed was sailing to Mattawoman Creek and rafting up with other sailing friends each Memorial Day weekend. Jerry also enjoyed racing sailboats on the Potomac River, the Chesapeake Bay and to the Caribbean. Other things he enjoyed were playing the guitar and crab feasts with family and friends. Jerry was preceded in death by his father, Sam, and his mother, Florence. He is survived by his two children, Jennifer (Nick) and Steven (Chris), his four grandchildren, Aaron, TJ, Megan and Ginny, his brother Damon, and his sister Toni as well as many other family members and friends. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday July 11th, 10 AM at National Funeral Home, 7482 Lee Highway, Falls Church, VA 22042. In lieu of flowers we would like donations made to Capital Caring. Condolences may be offered at murphyfuneralhomes.com.

Jerry and I were neighbors in the Dominion hills. Our children went to the same school. Jerry and l Graduated from Washington & Lee High school a year apart. I could always depend on him for a ride to work. He was a no nonsense dispatcher. Who saved me from some embarrassing moments His voice was commanding. R.I.P. Old Friend.

Hey Dad,

I wanted to thank you one more time for everything you did for Jennifer and I. You were a rock for us. We will miss you terribly, but we have a lifetime of memories to remember you by. I'm sad you are gone, but happy that you are now at peace. I hope one day to see you again. Love you always.

I met Jerry in 1978 when a fellow USCP Officer said that he knew a guy that was into sailing just like I was. Little did I know that that guy and I would sail and race together for years until Jerry's health began to fail him. We raced every Wednesday evening for at least 20 years, bought a boat together, sailed the BVI's, drank painkillers at the Soggy Dollar and did many other manly things. He loved MD crabs and would break into his rendition of "Drunken Sailor" when supplied with the right amount of rum or beer. Jerry was a "take no prisoners" dispatcher during his days with USCP. He could straighten out any wayward officer with the subtle tone of his voice. Jerry will be missed. My racing crew drank several toasts to him when we learned of his passing. Fair winds and following seas, Skipper.

I remember the excitement Uncle Jerry and my father had just talking about music. Playing it. Different parts of the song and such. I remember his funny laugh. Will miss you Uncle Jerry.
