Judith Kay Crosier Hubal was born on the 28 December 1931, just as the taxicab racing to the hospital with her parents, Mark and Jessie Crosier, crossed the railroad tracks in Sayville, Long Island, NY. On June 27th, a day before her 93rd and ½ birthday, Judy passed away peacefully, just after whispering “Beat Army” in her final breath at Sunrise of Fairfax.
She met her husband, Gus, who grew up on the same block, when his 2nd grade class came in to help in her 1st grade classroom. Their first kiss was during a marriage ceremony while performing “Rumpelstiltskin” in a Sayville Elementary School play.
Judy attended Wheaton College (MA) and graduated in May 1953, earning a bachelor’s degree in mathematics.
She married USNA graduate and newly commissioned Ensign Augustine Edward Hubal, Jr on 17 June 1953, and began her future as a Navy wife and mother. Their 10 moves in 28 years helped foster her skills in organizing, packing and transporting valued possessions. She later organized the “Mother Truckers,” a group of submarine wives of USNA Class of 1953. All the Mother Truckers had nicknames - hers was Quennie. The service amongst her dozen and a half lifelong Trucker friends would result in safe and efficient transfer of the kitchen and valuables from a Trucker’s old house to their new residence in one day, rendering the kitchen fully ready for family dinner preparations that very night.
Judy loved the beach and visiting her parents’ beach house on Fire Island was an annual summer treat. She passed on this love of the beach, taking her children wherever Gus was stationed: Waikiki in Honolulu; Sullivan’s Island in Charleston; and Virginia Beach. Eventually Judy and Gus built their own beach home in Sandbridge, VA. Her summers there included weeks of solitude, and a mixture of visits from friends and family. She had her schedule and to be included was an honor her kids and Grandkids jokingly compared with having an audience with the Queen. The summer schedule was concluded only when Navy football season began and tailgating with the Class of ‘53 started.
Judy lived in Falls Church for over 40 years until relocating to her final home at Sunrise of Fairfax in 2022. Her husband, Gus, predeceased her in 2008. She is survived by all three of her children; Allison (Mike) Pizzi, Mark (Amy) Hubal, and Scott (Marci) Hubal. Her seven grandchildren; Amanda (Brad) Uhl, Kim (Adam) Hodges, Scott (Sarah) Hubal, Chris and Sam Pizzi, Mark Hubal and Jess Hubal. Her eight great grandchildren; Atha, Everett, August, & Keiper (Uhl), John & Ella (Hodges), Tanner & Austin (Hubal).
Judy was so many things to so many people: the consummate Navy wife of Gus; a wonderful, fun and loving mother; a caring and loving grandmother; a stalwart of the "USNA '53" family; a core Mother Trucker; a true, lifelong friend; a lover of music; an avid sports fan; a fierce card and board game player; a hell of a tailgater; a downright funny lady with a quick wit and glorious sense of humor; and so much more. She will be missed by all that knew and loved her.
The Hubal & Pizzi families share the following information regarding the arrangements for their mom.
