

Mr. Muñoz was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador, the eldest son of Eudoro and Victoria Muñoz. His legacy was one of commitment to his family, education and public service to his community. During his years in Ecuador, he taught high school English before becoming a principal of several area high schools. He later served as the Director of Public Health for the city of Guayaquil and Director of Servicio Nacional de Eradicacion de la Malaria (translation: National Service for the Eradication of Malaria). The recipient of a national scholarship to further his education in the United States, Mr. Muñoz ultimately received a Master of Public Health degree from the University of Puerto Rico. This catapulted his career, ultimately serving as the Director of Public Health at the Community Group Health Foundation in Washington, DC and professor of Public Health at the University of the District of Columbia before transitioning into a career in public health with the District of Columbia, Department of Corrections.
Those left to cherish his life include his loving wife of sixty-three years, Clara Aurora Morante de Muñoz; three siblings, Alfredo, Renee and Teresa Muñoz; three children, Martha, Fernando (Cassandra), and Liliana; five grandchildren, Alexandra (Jim), Jennifer, Martha Elena, Erica, and Matthew; and three great-grandchildren, Audrey, Caroline, and Juliet.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11 am on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at the Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Annandale, VA with the Rev. Peter Okola officiating. Interment will be at 1 pm at the National Memorial Park in Falls Church, VA, with the repass to follow. The family will receive friends from 5 pm – 8 pm on Friday evening at the funeral home within the National Memorial Park.
Eulogizing Mr. Muñoz during his funeral mass will be Dr. Fernando Muñoz on behalf of his children and Ms. Jennifer Coello on behalf of the grandchildren. Pallbearers will be his son Fernando, grandson Matthew Gomez, nephew Yuri Cassanello, grandson-in-law Jim Shabelski, and family friends Edgar Gomez and Zach Larnard.
The family wishes to thank the staff of The Potomac Center of Pentagon City for the loving care given to Mr. Muñoz during his final years. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to their local chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association would greatly honor Mr. Muñoz’s desire to improve the quality of life for those living with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers.
