Captain Lennart G. Holmberg USN Ret, 45 year resident of McLean VA, passed away on Aug 30 2019, at 93 years old, in Sun City West, Arizona.
He was born May 10, 1926 into the family of Gustaf & Greta Holmberg in Lysekil, Sweden.
He immigrated to the US at 10 years old and lived in NYC until attending Upsala College in NJ. He subsequently earned his Master’s Degree in Political Science from Boston University, MA.
He joined the Navy at 17 years old, during WW2, & served in active duty for 36 years, including the Korean War, & Viet Nam.
He served on many ships, & rose to Command the Destroyer, USS Gearing {DD-710}. He later served on the staffs of the National War College, & the Joints Chiefs of Staff, Washington DC.
He was the first US exchange Officer with the Swedish Royal Navy.
He was a 60 year Masonic member, & secretary with the Sharon Sojourners Lodge.
He was Commander of the American Legion Post 270 in McLean for 8 years, & continued being a member in AZ. He was active in Trinity United Methodist Church, McLean VA. serving in many capacities.
Captain Holmberg was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, Lee Ohlbaum, his loving daughter, Susan Holmberg PhD. He is survived by his sisters, Karin Olsen, of Arizona, & Geri {John} Lingen MN, many friends, nieces,& nephews .
The Memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 21, 2020 at 10AM at Trinity United Methodist Church McLean Virginia, followed by a reception. The Masonic Lodge of McLean VA, & the American Legion Post 270 of McLean VA will honor him.
The Internment will follow the reception at 3PM, in Arlington National Cemetery
