 Obituario de Marilyn Sorce Klumpp
Marilyn Sorce Klumpp, age 86, passed away peacefully October 13, 2020 from a sudden stroke. She was born July 2, 1934 in Chicago, Illinois to Sam and Josephine Sorce. She married the love of her life, Elmer Klumpp, in March 1978. She was a loving mother to her daughters Cathy and Carol Klumpp, and devoted grandmother to Cathy’s sons Ryan and Scott McCabe. She also treasured her three dear sisters, Dolores, Jeannie and Pam. Marilyn earned a BA from Westhampton College, University of Richmond in 1956 and was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma honors society for women educators. She earned her M. Ed. in Guidance and Counseling from University of Virginia in 1961. She worked for many years as a guidance counselor in the Alexandria City Public Schools, achieving the “Young Educator of the Year” honor in 1969. Marilyn cared deeply for all her students and was particularly proud of helping so many gain college acceptances during her years as a counselor at TC Williams High School. She was an active member of Burke Presbyterian Church, serving as a current Deacon and a member of the women’s circle. Formerly, she was a member of Arlington Presbyterian Church for decades. She served in roles as diverse as money teller, coffee hour hospitality and home communion provider, and as a longstanding member of the team ensuring care for members of the congregation. She volunteered at the Ronda Gilliam Clothing Bank for many years. After moving to the Greenspring Retirement community in 2011, Marilyn participated in many activities – square dancing, water aerobics, yoga and other exercise classes, singing in choral performances, resident meals committee member, visiting and sending cards to residents in the Rehab center. Marilyn is survived by her husband Elmer Klumpp; her sisters and their husbands Jeannie and Al Smith, Pam and Joe Heisler; her daughter and son-in-law Cathy and Rich McCabe; her grandsons Ryan and Scott McCabe; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister Dolores Drumheller and daughter Carol Klumpp. Memorial contributions can be made to Burke Presbyterian Church, 5690 Oak Leather Drive, Burke, VA 22015; OR Philanthropy Department Greenspring, 7430 Spring Village Drive, Springfield, VA 22150 (checks to “Greenspring Scholars Fund”).
