
Of Rockville, MD, formally of Sunrise, Fl died Monday, September 13, 2010. Beloved husband of Esther (Sosin), loving father of Barbara Fayne (Barry), Susan Benezra (Marc) and Jeffrey Horner(Mary). Adored grandfather of Peter Fayne (Lisa), Michael Fayne, Valarie Rosen (Neil), Stacy Bell (David), Jennifer Austin (Shawn), Bradley Horner (Aimee), Taylor Horner and 9 great grandchildren. Also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends. Marty was known as a great story teller with the ability to always make people smile. Marty served in WWII as a Supply Sergeant. He was one of three soldiers who spent a full day as an MP driver touring Hiroshima just three months after the bomb was dropped. After VJ Day, he was sent to Japan as part of the occupation forces. When Marty returned from the war, he went into business with his father-in-law. Their manufacturing business, Wilmart Products Corporation, Greenpoint, Brooklyn, lasted 27 years. Marty’s religious life was always important to him. He, along with others, literally built the first Synagogue in Levittown, NY. The event was noted by a feature article in the NY Times. When he moved to Bayside, Queens, New York he continued his good works and rose to the Presidency of Bay Terrace Jewish Center. His crowning achievement as President was the donation of a Torah, in his parents’ names, to the congregation. Marty was very active in the Knights of Pythias, a charitable organization. He rose through the ranks to have the honor of being Past Chancellor. He was honored with a testimonial dinner and plaque for his time and devotion to the organization. After retirement in 1984, he and Esther retired to Sunrise, FL. Marty’s credo of giving to others continued. He was elected to the Sunrise Lakes, Phase 4 Condo Board of Directors and served as Secretary, Captain of his building and then Captain of all the building Captains. He was active on the board of the condo Golf Club. He was actively involved with the Broward County Council for Senior Citizens. Whenever Marty saw a need, he acted. He founded the Sunrise committee of the Needy, which arranged for holiday food baskets for needy families of all faiths several times a year. He chaired the annual blood drive and coordinated fund raising for the ambulance corps. He volunteered at the synagogue. He was recognized for his outstanding charity work by many organizations. He was Men's Club and the Golf Club's volunteer of the month. Marty was the volunteer of the year for the City of Sunrise, received the Anita Perlman Volunteer of the Year, 1994 US Mayors' End Hunger Award, The Samuel M. and Helene Soref Jewish Community Center Award of Appreciation, and the Golden Apple volunteer award form JC Penny Corp. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed taking brisk walks. One of his proudest moments was winning a walking race in the 75 year old age category and receiving a medal.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, September 15, 2010 at 1:00PM National Funeral Home, 7482 Lee Highway, Falls Church, VA. Interment immediately following at King David Memorial Gardens, Falls Church, VA. Following interment, dinner and Shiva will be at the home of Stacy and David Bell. The families will be observing Shiva Thursday at the homes of Barry and Barbara Fayne and Sue and Marc Benezra. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in Marty’s memory can be made to Manna Food Center, 9311 Gaither Road, Gaithersburg, MD 20877.
