Michael David Matthews passed away at his home in Arlington, Virginia on 27 June 2024 after a 14-month battle with cancer. Born in Huntington, New York on 22 December 1960 to Charles and Maureen Matthews, Mike was a cherished member of the community and federal workforce through his 63 years.
A graduate of Cold Spring Harbor High School in New York, Mike furthered his education at Carnegie Mellon University and The American University, where he earned a BS and MA in History, respectively. His career was marked by dedication and excellence at multiple federal government positions.
In 1995, Mike married Linda Hall, and together, raised their children to follow their dreams and have a global outlook.
Mike led an active life beyond work and enjoyed volleyball (playing and coaching) as well as blue water sailing. He was a member of the Storm Trysail Club and crewed on more than a dozen Newport-Bermuda races. He also enjoyed watching his boys play competitive soccer.
While our hearts mourn the loss, we take comfort in knowing he is no longer suffering. In Mike’s final thoughts he shared his pride in his sons and sincere thanks to his wife, family, colleagues, and friends. Mike will be remembered as a loving husband, father, brother, and friend. His outgoing personality and generosity will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Mike will be laid to rest on 13 July at the National Memorial Park in Falls Church, Virginia with a reception immediately following at the Matthews' home.
