

Percy Franklyn Klein, Jr. passed away on March 12, 2012. He was 97 years old. He was born on November 4, 1914 in Hancock, NY. His parents were Percy Franklyn Klein, Sr. and Harriet Merchant Klein of Hancock, NY. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ruby O. Klein, his daughter Ann R. Klein, and his granddaughter, Julie Ann Dunbar. Surviving members of his family include his son Don L. Klein and wife Nancy, his daughter Jane K. Dunbar and husband Windley, his grandson Scott W. Dunbar and wife Lora, his grandson David S. Klein and wife Alexandra, and his great grandchildren Abby S. Dunbar, Avery E. Dunbar, Aubrey R. Dunbar, and Caroline G. Klein.
Franklyn was a graduate of Hancock High School in Hancock, NY where he served as President of his Senior Class and enjoyed playing the saxophone in a jazz band. He obtained a Bachelor’s Degree from Park College in Parkville, Missouri. He served as Vice President of his Senior Class at Park College. He received a Master’s Degree from George Washington University and worked toward completing a doctoral degree at American University in Washington, DC.
Franklyn had a long outstanding career with the federal government working in the U.S. Patent Office and then the Internal Revenue Service where he retired as a Bureau Chief. His family resided in Washington, DC until 1957 when they moved to McLean, Virginia. He was a member of McLean Baptist Church. Upon retirement in December of 1974 Franklyn pursued his great love of music. He served as an organist at several churches in northern Virginia. He also served on various mental health boards. He served on the board of Pathway Homes and was a member of the Masonic Temple in McLean.
In 1993 Franklyn and Ruby moved to the retirement community of Westminster at Lake Ridge in Woodbridge, Va. Franklyn served as a member of the Resident Council at Westminster. He also enjoyed playing the piano and the organ in the Chapel Service, at the Assisted Living Teas, and in the Health Center. His great love of music inspired him to give organ recitals at Westminster. He had five organ recitals while he was in his 90’s which were enjoyed by many Westminster residents. Franklyn’s enduring spirit and gracious manner were an inspiration to his family and his friends, and his gift of music will long be remembered.
