

Virginia Anderson Spencer passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday, August 11, 2025 at Arleigh Burke Pavilion at Vinson Hall Retirement Community in McLean Virginia. She was 86 years old. Virginia was born on November 11, 1938 in Jacksonville, Florida to Jacob Paul Anderson and Martha Lenore Anderson and grew up in Jacksonville Beaches where her parents ran Arnot’s Bakery and Restaurant, a key establishment in a growing community. Virginia had two sisters, Phyllis Larkin (deceased) and Claire Lavery. Virginia attended Vanderbilt University where she met her husband Edmund Berle Spencer (retired USN) and they were married on June 6, 1960. They had two children, Paige and Paul Spencer, before moving to McLean, Virginia in 1971, where they raised their family for the rest of their lives

Virginia was an avid swimmer and very involved at Tuckahoe Recreation Center and Northern Virginia Swim League, as well as engaged in volunteering at Share of McLean. She was also very involved with her church Charles Wesley United Methodist Church. Virginia was a substitute teacher and teacher’s aide with Fairfax County Public School System for 10 years and then worked for 20 years with the U.S. Government in communications and computer systems. Upon her retirement she enjoyed several years of travelling with Edmund to many places across Europe and the United States, as well as visiting her family and friends and being a loving and caring grandmother to her four grandchildren, being actively involved in their lives.
Virginia is survived by her sister and husband, Claire and Jim, her daughter and son-in-law, Paige and Mark, her son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Suzanne, her four grandchildren Spencer, Michael, Ian and Toby, and her niece, husband and daughter Susan, Kenny and Lavery.
A private family viewing will be held on August 14, 2025 before cremation and then Virginia will join her husband at Arlington National Cemetery in a service to be scheduled at a later date.
