Our beloved Father, Grandfather, Brother, Uncle, and Friend, Walter Fredrick Seaberg Jr., age 76, passed away in Nokesville VA on June 17, 2014.
Born January 15th 1938 in Staten Island NY, he was the son of the late Walter F. Seaberg and Victoria (Wolf) Seaberg. He grew up in Staten Island NY, graduated from P.S. 29 in 1951, and graduated from Curtis High School in 1955. Growing up, he was known as “Butch” by his family. He was known by his grandchildren as “Grandpa”.
He was active in Scouting as a youth, and achieved the rank of First Class in the Boy Scouts of America. He played the accordion and was a sports photographer during high school. He enlisted in the United States Navy (USN) in 1955 and received an honorable discharge in 1959. During his service in the USN, he was stationed at Memphis TN, Adak Alaska, Moffett Field in CA, and Patuxent River Naval Air Station in MD.
He met Patricia J. Mankin in 1958 in Hyattsville MD, set up on a blind date. Their first date was at the Patuxent River Naval Air Station. They were engaged later that year; and married on February 5th 1959 at Saint John De Baptist De La Salle Catholic Church in Chillum MD.
After the Navy and prior to being appointed to the police department (approximately 2.5 years), he held several different jobs; stocked Shelves in the Acme market on Staten Island, NY: driving a milk truck for Sealtest Dairy at 2535 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, D.C, selling Kirby vacuum cleaners door-to-door; and working at Citizens Bank of Maryland in Riverdale, MD.
He was appointed to the Metropolitan Police Department (DC) on October 30th 1961 and served at #4 and #10 Precincts (Police Radio Shop). He transferred to the White House Police on July 3rd 1966 and was promoted to Sergeant on July 11th 1971. He is a 1974 graduate of the FBI National Academy (96th Session). He was promoted to Lieutenant on November 10th 1974. He received an associate degree in the Administration of Justice from the American University (DC) in 1976. He was promoted to Captain Oct. 7. 1979. He retired September 30th 1984. During his first five (5) years of retirement, he did part time security work for the Mellon Family in Washington, D.C.
He was from a "Police Family": 1) his grandfather George Albert Wolf retired as a patrolman. NYPD; 2) his uncle John Langell retired as a Detective Lieutenant, NYPD; 3) his cousin John Langell retired as a Sergeant, NYPD; 4) his cousin Richard Langell retired as a Patrolman. NYPD; 5) his brother Richard John Seaberg retired as a Patrolman, NYPD; and 6) his nephew Richard John Seaberg Jr. retired as a Pennsylvania State Trooper.
He enjoyed bowling, amateur radio, working in his workshop, working on the computer, and most of all, spending time with his grandchildren and family. He belonged to the Masonic Lodge (Macon Ware #192) and was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association (NRA). He coached youth softball and volunteered on his son’s Boy Scout Troop Committee and spent many summers as an adult leader at summer camp.
He is survived by his 4 children, Debbie Buchanan, Darlene Teets (Marvin), Denise Fogleman (Dave), and Walter F. Seaberg III (Suzanne); 7 grandchildren, Kristee Buchanan, Tim Teets (Stephanie), Marsha Teets (Russ), Bradley Teets (Katherine), Meredith Seaberg, Maria Seaberg, and Walter F. Seaberg IV (“Fourman”); and 2 brothers, Richard Seaberg and Stephen Seaberg.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death his beloved wife of 54 years, Patricia J. Seaberg (in 2013) and by his brother Alan Seaberg (in 2004).
Funeral service will be held on Wednesday June 25th 2014 at National Funeral Home, 7482 Lee Highway, Falls Church, VA 22042 (703-560-4400). Viewing from 11 a.m. until time of funeral service at 1 p.m. Interment at 2 pm will be private.
