Wesley Thomas Whitfield

Wesley was 67 years old at the time of his death; passing suddenly of a pulmonary embolism at Reston Hospital. Wesley was one of six children born to Colonel and Mrs. Joe Whitfield of Falls Church, Virginia. He started traveling at a young age – having learned Italian before he learned English when the family lived in Rome, Italy. He went to the American School on the Rhine River in Bonn, Germany in the mid-60’s when his father was stationed at the American Embassy. He was a graduate of J.E.B. Stuart High School in Falls Church, VA. Wesley and Roxana Aviles dated each other for a decade before they were married in Ixtapa, Mexico in August 1999. They took up residence in Centreville, Virginia. Wesley and Roxana shared a passion for international travel and visited many countries together, immersing themselves in different cultures. He was an extremely loving husband, always putting “his beautiful wife” Roxana before himself. He had a very close relationship with Roxana’s family and was like a son to her mother, and a brother to his in laws, Guadalupe and Julio César Aragon. They enjoyed many joyous family gatherings together with Roxana’s extended family. Wesley is survived by his wife Roxana, sisters Kathy Pratt of Mandeville, Louisiana, Susie McCabe (Curtis) of Falls Church, Virginia, brothers Louis Whitfield of New Windsor, Maryland, and Joe Whitfield, Jr. of Roanoke, Virginia. His sister Anne Whitfield preceded him in death in 1970. He was a loving uncle to many nieces and nephews and will be greatly missed. All services will be held on Sunday, December 9, 2018 at the National Funeral Home, 7482 Lee Highway, Falls Church, Virginia, with visitation from 12:00 noon 2:00 pm; memorial service at 2:00 pm; burial at 3:00 pm; and reception at 3:30 pm.
