Wilbur Martin Schlosser age 96 died peacefully at home on January 20, 2023 surrounded by his loving family. He was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey to Samuel and Marion Schlosser in 1926. He grew up in Brooklyn then later, moved to Monticello, New York, where his father had a sign painting business.
He graduated from Drexel University in 1947 with a degree in mechanical engineering and got his first job as an engineer with the federal government in Washington D.C. In 1962 he started the W.M. Schlosser Construction company which is still in operation today. Some of the projects he was most proud of were building 49 NIH, Navy Memorial, FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine, and the lifting of the Lady of Freedom Statue atop the Capitol Building.
He bought a ranch in 1972 and developed it into a tranquil and beautiful family home in the Blue Ridge Mountains where he spent the next forty years. He had a second home on Sanibel Island, Florida where he opened a restaurant, Wil’s Landing. He enjoyed racquetball, golf and boating. He was very active on the island, everyone knew him and he helped develop what is now the famous Bailey Mathews Shell Museum. His love of dogs was ever present.
He is survived by his loving partner Patty Wassel, his son Peter(Lydia) Schlosser, Andrew(Tracy) Schlosser, Jane(Steve) Carlin, Tom (Marci) Schlosser, Mary Ann(Tom) Mullin, Taylor(Selene) Schlosser, Mark(deceased). He loved spending time with his twelve grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. He was predeceased by former wives Susan Schlosser and Lynn Schlosser and sister Estabel. The family requests donations be made to the ASPCA or the National Shell Museum (Sanibel Island). A memorial service will be held in the Spring.
