William George (Bill) Teed, 82, of Arlington, Virginia, passed away peacefully on December 30, 2024, at Virginia Hospital Center. His life was defined by his love for his family and his passion for our country. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Teed; his children Rebecca Teed of Beavercreek, OH, Joseph Teed of Falls Church, VA, and Jacqueline Lapacek of Palm Harbor, FL; and his grandchildren Malcolm Teed and Elizabeth Lapacek.
Bill was born on May 25, 1942, in Milford, Massachusetts, to Roy and Isabelle Teed. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma in May 1964 with a Bachelor’s degree in Geography, where he also participated in the Navy ROTC program. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in May 1959 as a Radarman while completing his studies and was commissioned as an intelligence officer upon graduation.
Bill served with distinction for 25 years, retiring honorably in August 1984 at the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Throughout his military career, Bill received numerous commendations, including the Bronze Star, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Service Commendation with a bronze oak leaf cluster, two Navy Unit Commendations, the Vietnam Service Medal with four campaign stars, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. His assignments included roles at the Defense Intelligence Agency in Washington, DC; Reconnaissance Attack Squadron Three in Key West, FL; the Navy Liaison Unit in Munich, Germany; the U.S. Military Assistance Command in Saigon, Vietnam; Light Photographic Reconnaissance Squadron Sixty-Three in Miramar, CA (during which he was embarked on the USS Intrepid); and aboard the USS Kitty Hawk out of San Diego, CA. These assignments reflect his sense of duty, service, and love for his country.
After retiring from the Navy, Bill continued his public service as an intelligence analyst for the U.S. Civil Service from January 1989 to August 2008. His colleagues knew him as a dedicated professional with a sharp analytical mind and unwavering professionalism. He was recognized for training and providing assistance to others wherever help was needed, despite his own demanding responsibilities. In both his military and civil service careers, he was known for gladly volunteering to go repeatedly into harm’s way in service for his country, to augment struggling units or provide temporary assistance.
His family was the center of his universe. He met Margaret Forbes, when they were both assigned to Lowry Air Force Base and married her at St. James Church in Salem, MA on June 10, 1967. He had three children and two grandchildren, who were his favorite people in the world. He had a genuine and warm sense of playfulness, especially with his grandchildren, with whom he loved to watch cartoons, visit playgrounds, and read picture books. He taught his eight-year-old grandson, Malcolm how to play poker for candy. He gave spunky personalities to stuffed animals, for example, chasing Elizabeth around the house with the feisty “Blue Bear”. His grandchildren would sleep for days after a visit with Grandpa.
A Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 9th from 5-8PM at Murphy Funeral home in Falls Church.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held the following day at St. James Church in Falls Church on January 10th at 10 AM.
Bill’s legacy of service, dedication, and family will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
