Peter was born on June 3, 1928, in Brooklyn, New York. He exemplified deep devotion to his family and Catholic faith. Peter graduated from St. Bonaventure University in Olean, NY. Upon graduation Peter entered the United States Army.
A Lieutenant in the United States Army, he served as a Combat Air Reconnaissance Officer during the Korean conflict. He lived a long and meaningful life spanning almost a century witnessing extraordinary changes in the world and met them with faith, perseverance, strength and a refined, Irish sense of humor that brought light and smiles to those around him.
Peter was preceded in death in 2013 by his beloved wife of 63 years, Jane-lee McCabe, with whom he shared a lifetime of love, partnership, and family. He was also preceded in death by his eldest grandson, Peter McCabe IV, and infant daughter, Julia who are all greeting him in heaven with open arms.
Peter is survived by his 6 children and their spouses: Peter McCabe (Kim) of Harwood, Maryland; Patricia Kraatz (Michael) of Jacksonville, Florida; Jane-lee McCabe of Milton, Delaware; Scott McCabe (Alice) of Manheim, Pennsylvania; Daniel McCabe (Sharon) of Benton, Louisiana; and Christopher McCabe (Brenda) of Calhoun Falls, South Carolina.
Peter had the love of eleven grandchildren and is survived by Julie, Katie, Tim, Scott, Ken, Mark, Cristie, Alex, Diana, Andrew, and Alicia and nine great-grandchildren Tucker, Alyssa, Jack, Bella, Kayden, Kaila, Chloe, Emma, and Alyiyah. Each of whom held a special place in his heart and unique bond despite the miles that separated them. Tucker Pollard, who lived closest in proximity shared a special connection with “GP” through their frequent visits and mutual love of sports.
Even at 97 years old, Peter remained closely connected to his family and the world around him. His daily ritual of checking Facebook and simply “liking” a post was his way of checking in on everyone he loved. When he chose to post, it was most often a prayer for his family and for the world, reflecting his enduring faith and compassion. He remained keenly aware of major world events and engaged with life until the very end.
Those who knew Peter will remember his steady presence, his deep love for family, his quiet humor, and the example he set through a life well lived.
