Eugene “Gene” Johnson age 74 of Oak Hill passed away peacefully on June 8, 2025. An entrepreneur, running his own business, Gene spent his life in the service of God and his family, always ready to lend a hand to anyone who needed it and always making time for his family. He attended Jones Avenue Church of God with his wife Damita, spent time with his children and grandchildren, and thoroughly enjoyed any time he could spend with his brothers and sisters. A graduate of Fayetteville high school in 1969, Gene continued to keep up with the local sporting events and made sure to cheer on his grandson Keltan and his ‘best buddy’ Cane at every game he could make. Outside of his business and time with his family he had a great love of fishing, going every chance he got and entering fishing tournaments frequently with his brother Bill. Gene had a happy life, singing and whistling everywhere he went and always having a smile for everyone he met.
Proceeding him in death are his parents William and Marjorie Johnson, brother-in-law Tom Wright and brother-in-law Johnny Brewer. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Damita Johnson; daughters Gina Ann Johnson (Danny), Annette Johnson, and Hilliary Johnson, grandchildren Gabrielle Johnson, Delaney Johnson, Nautica Johnson (Caleb), Keltan Harper, Cane Treadway, Camila Litten, and Heidi Mustafa; his brothers and sisters, William “Bill” Johnson (Debbie), Dewey Johnson (Teresa), Ann Emsley, Margaret Brewer, John Johnson (Judy), George Johnson (Tamara), and Joyce Maples; his brothers and sisters in-law with whom he was close, James Nutter (Frances), William Nutter (Vickie), Naomi Ramsey (Roger), Ronda Wright, and Eddie Nutter (Crystal); many nieces and nephews and his beloved dog Penny.
A visitation will be held Wednesday June 11, 2025 from 5:30p-7p and from 11am -12p on Thursday June 12, 2025 with funeral service to follow. All services will be held at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, anyone wishing to leave condolences can do so at doddpaynehessfuneralhome.com.
