
JOHN L. MATTHEWS BECKWITH – John L. Matthews, 62, of Beckwith, passed away Friday, June 6, at CAMC General Hospital, Charleston. He was born on July 30, 1951 in Glendale, California; and was the son of the late Donald and Carolyn Matthews. John served his country in the U.S. Army National Guard and Coast Guard. He retired as a Captain from the California Department of Forestry after 25 years of service. His greatest passion was anything that involved the ocean. He loved boating, skiing and sailing. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Mitzie (Matthews) Thomas; brother, David Matthews; and step-grandchild, Slayton Smith. Those left to cherish his memories include his wife, Lois Bandy Matthews; his son, Jeffery Matthews, step-daughter, Deborah (Smith) Trevithick; step-son and wife, William and Josette Smith; seven ste-grandchildren: Shaunna Snyder, Lindsey Edwards, Zachery Smith, Wyatt Trevithick, Josh Smith, Kayden Smith, and Noah Smith; three step-great grandchildren: Rylann and Alaynna Harris, and Drake Nix; and a host of other family and friends. According to his wishes, John will be cremated. There will not be a memorial service. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
