

Alex Mason, 91, a devoted family man, and faithful servant of God, departed this life on April 27, 2026. Born on February 28, 1935, in Mocksville, North Carolina, he was the beloved son of the late Edna Winford Mason and the late Rev. John B. Mason. Alex received his education in Mocksville, North Carolina. He went on to serve his country with honor in the United States Army from October 1955 to October 1957, achieving the rank of Corporal before receiving an honorable discharge.
Following his military service, Alex moved to New York City where he built a long and dedicated career with the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA). Alex joined the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church of Rockaway Beach under the leadership of his brother, the Rev. Dr. Thomas F. Mason. There he met and married Helen Vanager, sharing a loving and enduring marriage of over 60 years. To this union 3 sons were born, David, Rodney, and Scott Michael (deceased).
Alex worked faithfully in New York City until his retirement in 1996. That same year, here located to Palm Coast, Florida, where he continued to live a life rooted in service, faith, and community.
A man of deep and abiding faith, Alex was a devoted member of First Baptist Church in Palm Coast. He faithfully served his church in many capacities, including driving the van for senior members, participating in disaster relief efforts, and contributing to the Men's Sunday School.
His quiet dedication and servant’s heart touched many lives.
Alex was known for his warm spirit, his gift for storytelling, and his ability to bring laughter and wisdom into any room. He enjoyed bowling in a senior league, traveling, and remaining actively
engaged in his community. He was also a proud and active member of the NAACP and the NYC Transit Retirees Chapter #2 in Palm Coast.
Like the Apostle Paul stated in 2 Timothy 4:7, Alex has fought a good fight, finished his course, and I has kept the faith. With this assurance, we honor a life well lived and a journey faithfully completed.
He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife, Helen; his sons, David Mason (Deanna) and Rodney Mason (Donna); his grandsons, Alex John and Adam Scott; his brother, Alfred; his sister in laws, Sylvia Bryant and Eula Vanager, niece and sister in love, Jeannette Clyburn; his goddaughter and niece, Brooke; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, dear friends, and his cherished church family, all of whom will deeply miss him.
A Church Visitation will be held at First Baptist Church of Palm Coast, 6050 Palm Coast Parkway NW, Palm Coast, Florida 32137, on May 13, 2026, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am. Funeral Service to begin at 11:00 AM.
Interment with Military Honors will take place at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery, 5525 US-1, Mims, Florida 32754, on May 14, 2026.
