Born on October 19, 1950, in Paterson, New Jersey, Dave was the beloved son of the late James and Helen Nelson. He graduated from Waldwick High School in 1968 and went on to spend many years working as a long-distance truck driver across the West Coast of the United States—a career that reflected his love of the open road.
In 1991, Dave returned to the East Coast, where he reconnected with his childhood sweetheart, Virginia Cederberg. The two were married in 1992, beginning a loving partnership that spanned more than three decades. In 2001, they made their home in Florida.
Dave dedicated the later part of his career to education, joining Florida Technical Institute as an instructor in the CDL program. Through his passion for teaching and mentorship, he eventually became the program’s director. He took great pride in helping others build their careers and was honored to be named Teacher of the Year twice during his tenure.
Outside of work, Dave found joy in riding motorcycles and playing the guitar—simple pleasures that reflected his free spirit and creative soul.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 34 years, Virginia “Ginny” Nelson; his children, Tracy (Doug) Struyk, David Nelson Jr., Joseph (Rose) Milano, and Lisa (Nick) Koutsoulis; his cherished grandchildren, Alyssa, Michael, Adam, and Hazel; his brother, Rich (Lisa) Nelson; and many loving relatives, friends, and colleagues who will miss him dearly.
Dave will be remembered for his warm heart, strong work ethic, and the lasting impact he made on all who knew him.
A Memorial Gathering will be held at Craig Flagler Palms Funeral Home, 511 Old Kings Road South, Flagler Beach, Florida 32136, on May 2, 2026, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm with a Memorial Service beginning at 12pm, committal to follow in the cemetery
